THE first couple to wed at Somerset House have tied the knot.
Amy Lodge, 29, and Andrew Earnshaw, 32, of Rastrick, exchanged vows in the Georgian mansion's newly renovated Grand Salon.
The building was hidden by a row of shops for over 100 years until it was restored and renovated as part of the Halifax Renaissance project, funded by Yorkshire Forward.
Mr Earnshaw, said: "We are privileged to be the first couple to marry here.
"It was an unexpected course of events that brought us here but the building is amazing."
The couple had planned to marry in Las Vegas but changed their minds when Amy's dad was told he would not be able to fly after he suffered a heart attack.
So they decided on Somerset House and will fly to Vegas later for another ceremony conducted by an Elvis lookalike.
Superintendent registrar Dorothy Clarkson performed the ceremony. She said: "We have all been thrilled by this marvellous room.
"The Grand Salon has been hidden for so many years and it was a great pleasure to share it with everyone on this very special day.."
Somerset House will now be the main location for weddings, civil partnership and baby naming ceremonies in Calderdale. It will also be used for citizenship ceremonies, along with Halifax Town Hall.
