AN ANGRY mum says she and dozens of others have been left stranded by bus service changes.
Lynda Hunt, from Cobble-stones Drive in Illingworth, Halifax, used to take TJ Walsh's 700 service to the supermarket, post office, chemists and Halifax town centre.

The 53-year-old, who has two children, is on crutches because of deep vein thrombosis and struggles to walk.

TJ Walsh stepped in to run the service last year after First announced it was axing its 520 route buses in the Heathmoor Park area.

Now it says First is bringing back a half-hourly service, so it cannot continue with the 700.

But Mrs Hunt says the First service does not go to Morrisons .

"It's not just me, a lot of elderly people and people who have disabilities who live around here rely on that bus," she said.

"I didn't even know it was stopping. I went out there and waited at the bus stop but nothing came.

"There were no notices on the bus saying it wasn't running any more."

Mrs Hunt, a former nurse, says the nearest stop for a bus that does go to the supermarket is more than half a mile away – too far for her to walk.

"The service was ideal. Now I can go to Halifax town centre but it's a long walk to Sainsburys."

She added: "I used it all the time, not just for Morrisons but to go to the post office and chemist to get my prescription."

Mrs Hunt claimed the service was always busy.

Neil Walsh, of TJ Walsh Bus company, said: "It's a shame to lose a bus service but we can't run a service there when there is a another bus every half hour."

TJ Walsh said there was no subsidy available for the route but they were doing it as a goodwill gesture and would stand the cost of running it.

Meanwhile bus service cuts in Mixenden by transport operator First have had residents up in arms.

A public meetings is taking place on tomorrow at 6.30pm at Holy Nativity Church in Mixenden to discuss the changes.

just goes to show profit before people. Nationalise the busses!

Of course it's profit before people - when will people realise that these companies are not charities, running a service at a loss can only result in the company folding eventually and then there'll be no service for anyone

I agree with the priciple of providing transport for those who need it, but seriously question why I saw 5 (yes FIVE) ALL EMPTY buses, just after 10 a.m. on Tuesday, within the space of less than 30 seconds, at Illingworth Roads junction of Keighley Road. I also seriously question if these operators make any profit at all, or are they so heavily subsidised (on the Q.T.) by those who dont use them?? i.e. .....me??

I agree with #1.

Elliesdad, you need to look at it from a different viewpoint, that of service to people, not that of profit for a company. Do we want a society which is there for all? If yes, then there are certain things to which the profit motive cannot reasonably be applied. I believe public transport should be run as a service, not a profit making venture. If this were to really happen, all parts of the community would be properly served by a decent transport network.

At least there is a half hourly service. My service was completely taken away 6 years ago and cannot be brought back. My nearest bus stop that I can get on a bus is Hx town centre! The lovely Linda Riorden had no punch to get it back either. The new routed service goes past 4 houses (down Water Lane to Siddal) but when it went through bailey Hall and Nestle factory it had the potential of hundred`s of houses to pick up from. Barmy service, barmy system, barmy country!

hello i'm lynda hunt's daughter and i came to say i totally disagree with #6.
i'll tell you this now how can a disabled or an elderly person drive in the ice or snow? how can they get the money for a taxi when she really wants a job but can't work? can you get a shopping delivery for prescriptions, tablets, money from the bank or getting christmas shopping etc.
we live on our own and my brother is in the army. he wishes he could help us more but he can't.
and by the way alot of people use the bus.
my mum has worked all her life as a staff nurse, she is always cheerfull, never moans and all she wants is one little TJ walsh bus to come round one every hour.
thank you

yes, nationalise everything for the workers benefit. Then we can all be like East Germany !! Heaven on earth that was.

Buses make money or they stop running. Get a taxi if you can't walk easily.

Why do readers have to ask the questions the Courier should be asking ?? Mobility allowance ? eh ??

Missbehave (Princess Fiona),

we pay a subsidy to run buses that are not commercially viable, but it is wasted by metro, BRANCH SECRETARY THE bus service is much cheaper under private enterprise.

nationalise buses? possibly lets see how you do with the banxs first little laddie

to improve public transport metro should be disbanded and its duties passed to west yorkshire councils.
