Proud to salute flag at school

REGARDING the Government's idea that schoolchildren should salute the flag and swear allegiance to Queen and country, I agree entirely.
I remember attending school on Armistice Day and Empire Day when we marched around the school, turned our eyes left and saluted our wonderful flag.
How proud we were and woe betide anyone laughing or acting in a foolish manner. No sports lessons for two or three weeks; no playtime for the same period; stay in after school for a week.
It made many of us potential sergeant majors, and we were all taught all verses of God Save the Queen, I Vow to Thee My Country and the old favourite, Rule Britannia.
Not much of this type of attitude left today. Why?
