I would have thrown rotten eggs at Julie

I've just read the Julie Felix review (Courier, November 29) and it made me feel sick.
I hate these sanctimonious, self-righteous hypocrites who preach their slimy liberal values at you.

I wish I'd been there to heckle or throw rotten eggs or tomatoes at her. (I'd have probably got lynched from the nearest lamp post by the self-righteously indignant faitful.)

What would she and her smug crowd have done in the face of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai this week? Sing at them? Or do what they always do and look down their noses at those who are brave enough to take a stand against the unmitigated evil of terrorism, like our young men fighting to hold the Taliban back in Afghanistan for instance? And I understand that Barack Obama is planning to send more American troops to Afghanistan, not bring them home.

Blaming George Bush and Tony Blair for the so-called insurgency is too easy. These sanctimonious hypocrites should blame Al Qaeda and Muslim fundamentalists for all the death and carnage that's happening in the Middle East, as well as other parts of the world right now.

They're the ones who have absolutely no respect for human life.

(Mr) Phil Fletcher

What do you mean by liberalism Phil? In economic terms liberalism is free market economics or so it said in all by Open University Geography social science degree books I avidly read a few years ago. So Missbehave(Princess Fiona) makes a good point that modern day Tories are liberals. What ever you are talking about you are not talking about liberalism but you are a dangerous fundamentalist yourself - Why? you are advocating not allowing these people there right to speak simply because you do not agree with them. The Tories would never do that because they are liberals!

I don't think the writer is advocating denying these people their right to free speech, BM. What i do find loathsome, however, is that the writer thinks it acceptable to throw eggs at someone whose views differ from their own. I am fundamentally opposed to Liberalism (that's SOCIAL Liberalism, BM), but there are proper ways of opposing it. We tried it. It didn't work. People know that and its days are now numbered.

I hadn't read the review, so I'm making assumptions. A few days ago, BBC broadcast a story where a village had been bombed by an American missile on the Pakistani/Afghan border. It was stated that the congregation was for a wedding and many had died.

Think about that. How would you feel if your relatives had died in that bombing?

If I lived there and saw my family go up in smoke, I'd probably end up hating Britain and the USA and want to hit back. Isn't that human nature?

This simple failure to understand, is why Blair and Bush should face a war crimes tribunal at the Hague.

piratepete - as a mentally ill man social liberalism is the only political system that would recognise my basic freedoms. Communists socialists and capitalists would look at my usefulness to society and my ability to produce wealth for the collective or individual that would compromise my humanity, there are recent examples in all these systems that lead to basic humanity to those with mental health problems being compromised and treated like laboratory rats. Functionalists cast and feudal systems would ensure I stay in poverty. The fact is liberalism is a result of the failure of just about every other system from the point of view of the lower social orders in society like myself, it is not perfect but my life is so much better as a mentally ill man than in systems that do not have at there base human dignity of all in that society

Julie felix used to sing we're going to the zoo. I thought she was dead.

I can't stand intolerance.

I wonder if we're really doing any good going to these places. It's worth talking about.

I'd argue that none of the social systems you mention are as rigid as you might like to think. The fact that liberalism makes the false assumption that everyone is inherently decent and honest makes it get the big thumbs down from me. Conversely, a move away from liberalism would instil a (sorely needed) sense of personal responsibility and self-reliance into society, which would lead to a liberation from the state.

Still, if we can't agree, we could always just chuck eggs at each other.

PiratePete - have you lost your faith and wonder on the human world? liberalism is based on the faith that everyone has good in them. I am a strong supporter of social learning theories and that badness is socially learned.

I'd like to think that if I hadn't been born severely sight impaired that I'd have played some small part in the war against terror and religious bigotry, these are the only two causes that I'd put my life on the line for, and I stand by everything I said in my published letter; have you chattering class moved on already. FREE SPEECH? ONE EACH! (1984.)

Hopefully Phil,Gordon Brown will double his efforts alongside Barack Obama, in their unwavering desire to eradicate Al Qaeda and the rest of the Muslim Fundamentalists by whatever means,as the cowardly Tories and their Pacifist cohorts, have no stomach in relation to fighting this evil Cancer.
