Hospital was OK – 10 years ago

I FEEL I must write in defence of Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. I started working there as a 17 year old student in 1969, a year after it had opened and it was a state-of-the-art building and full of light.
I had been treated as a patient in Halifax General Hospital the same year and the clinic I had to attend was in the basement. I have never been in a more depressing place in my life, an ancient Victorian building with no natural light. There was no comparison.
I admit I haven't been to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for at least 10 years and I suppose it has become uncared for and shabby, but believe me whatever state it is in it must be infinitely preferable to the old Halifax General Hospital.
Even the new building Calderdale Royal Hospital is not a place I would care to spend any length of time in as it too has very little natural light and all the out-patient clinics are very claustrophobic.
Give me Huddersfield Royal Infirmary anytime.
