David and Goliath tale

HEBDEN Bridge Little Theatre rounds off its year's programme with Terence Rattigan's classic drama The Winslow Boy.
Based on an actual court case in Edwardian times, the play tells the story of Ronnie Winslow, a young naval cadet being accused of a petty theft and expelled from his college without any representation or right of appeal.
His family believe he is innocent and take on the might of the Admiralty establishment in a quest to get a fair trial. Their challenge gains strength when Sir Robert Morton, a leading barrister of the time, takes on their case. What seemed a trivial matter over the theft of a postal order becomes an issue of principle – what are you prepared to suffer to see justice done?
Director Jenny Gore says: "It's a real David versus Goliath story with strong characters making huge sacrifices in their personal lives to see right done. It's an intense, exciting drama examining moral issues which are just as relevant today."
Thomas Brown makes his major debut with the society as the Winslow boy and Dave Gunning, recent award winner at the Fleetwood Festival, plays Sir Robert Morton. There are three other debutants – Julia Landale, Nigel Jamieson and Sara Robinson. Jacki Reed returns to the stage as Mrs Winslow and her husband is played by Bob Morton.
The other members of the Winslow family are played by Sarah-Jane Price and Wesley Downs. The cast list is completed by Derek Furniss.
The play runs from Monday until Saturday, December 6 (7.30pm) at the Little Theatre. Tickets are available at Innovation or can be booked on 01422 843907.
