AMBITIOUS proposals for a £4 million development of Halifax's historic Square Chapel were given a cautious welcome.

More than 30 people attended a public meeting to see early outline plans for the transformation which will link the 18th century Grade 2* building with the Piece Hall via a copper and glass atrium.

A new 100-seat theatre, public sun terrace and continental cafe-bar with art gallery would also be created, the meeting was told. They would be linked by a huge triangular foyer.

Robin Sutcliffe, the retired chairman of the Square Chapel Arts Centre Trust, said: "This place has grown so much over the years it's amazing and this is a new exciting journey we are embarking on.

"It will be the first step of what we hope will turn the whole area back into the heart of Halifax."

And one Piece Hall trader said: "We've been waiting 27 years for someone to do something which will bring people here. Now let's get on and do it."

The development would include knocking through the south wall of the Piece Hall to create a new entrance into the newly expanded Square Chapel.

Funding is expected to come from Yorkshire Forward, Arts Council Yorkshire and Calderdale Council, which has already given its backing to the project.

But not everyone was convinced by the early plans by architects Evans Vettori.

Ian Parker, who regularly volunteers at the Square Chapel, said: "This is an intrusive development to my eye.

"If the Square Chapel needs to expand why not look for a new site instead of imposing it on these two historic buildings which it would not suit."

Another public meeting to discuss proposals will be held at the Square Chapel on Thursday January 15 at 6pm.

From the artist's impression, it does rather look as if the walkway would be out of keeping with the surrounding area. And, for goodness sake, why knock a hole in the wall of the Piece Hall - that surely would destroy the arcitectural integrity of what is a fine building. The walkway would be as out of place as the plastic monstrosity thrown up in Westgate.

I am going to object to planning on those grounds alone Pauline

You're all correct, I mean afterall, the Piece hall is such an astounding success at the moment, I cant see why it would need to adapt to encourace more people in. More people heading towards the Piecehall, thats the last thing we need.
And as for Westgate. I was enjoying a coffee in there last week, whilst it was raining, and I was thinking to myself 'what a shame I'm not sat here in there rain, looking at all the run down buildings that used to be here, obscured by the buss stops and fume pumping busses' such a shame really.

when dealing with applications regarding buildings that are listed, extensions will not be encouraged unless its clear they are from another period.

its thinking from the listed building people, so we get what Charles calls "carbuncles"

ANYTHING MATCHING WILL NOT BE APPROVED!

Best Wishes.

I'm afraid, Fiona, that I do not a great deal of confidence in Calderdale Council when it comes to listed buildings. The reason - the Akroydon Model village is full of listed buildings - a great number of which have flouted Listed Building Regulations and have adapted the houses in ways which are not permitted, most specifically by removing stone mullions and replacing them with PVC fittings.

Fiona youre an idiot. You just write whatever pops into your head. Non of the above is even close to the truth.

Thanks for your best wishes. My wish is that you would THINK BEFORE YOU TYPE.

Graciously Yours,

The report in the paper did not mention that concern was expressed over the plans for the new annexe. This brick built modern structure will have a flat roof in contrast with the surrounding buildings. What are your views?
