Nearly half of families are reliant on two incomes to maintain a comfortable standard of living, research showed today.
Around 47 per cent of people said they needed both partners to work for their lifestyle, according to life insurer Scottish Widows.
The figure rose to 61 per cent among households with children, suggesting that increasing numbers of mothers have had to go back to work after having children.
The research also found that families with children had higher levels of both secured and unsecured debt than households without children.
The average household with dependent children owes £88,5000 on their mortgage, with a further £9,359 owed through unsecured debt during the past three months.
By contrast, households without dependent children had £77,500 outstanding on their mortgage and £7,223 in other debts.
