HALIFAX RUFC will give a debut to scrum half Ian Worsley as they look to secure a first National Three (North) win of the season at fellow strugglers Darlington Mowden Park tomorrow (2.15).
Initially it is a stop-gap measure while regular No 9 Dom Castle regains fitness from a back problem. However, head coach Dave Harrison would not rule out the possibility of the 32-year-old former Rotherham and West Park (St Helens) player remaining
at Ovenden Park.
Worsley is the brother of Halifax hooker Steve and arrives at the club with first hand knowledge of the trials and tribulations of the campaign to date.
"We have brought Ian in initially as a temporary measure, but if he enjoys it and shows up well then there is no reason why we shouldn't try to keep him," said Harrison.
"He has played at a good level with Rotherham in the past and while at 32 he isn't in the early stages of his career, he has enough experience to hopefully do a good job for us.
Another experienced player, lock Martin Smith, is also in line for a place in the squad provided he gets the all-clear from a long-standing back problem.
"It is good to have somebody like Martin involved," added Harrison. "Halifax don't have many stalwarts, but Martin certainly fits into that category.
"He has been at the club a fair while and he provides the link between the players, the officials and the supporters, and you need that continuity at this level in particular."
While Harrison's pack remains settled, the backs require some tinkering with Oli Marns the latest high profile casualty with a disc problem in his neck.
He was due to visit a neuro-surgeon for a check up but Harrison believes the injury is not too serious though it will require rest.
Ian Worsley's appearance means that Gareth Brear can return to the wing with Harrison opting to stick with the centre partnership of Danny McGee and Tommy Gallagher, backs coach Craig Emmerson taking a place on the bench.
Tomorrow's game could be seen as vital to Halifax's survival hopes with Darlington MP lying just one place above them and six points better off.
However, Harrison will instruct his troops to stick to the game plan and not be derailed by thoughts of the "must-win" mentality.
"I hate clichés, but we really cannot afford to look further than this game," said Harrison. "So, as usual will be looking first and foremost for lots of enthusiasm and endeavour."
