MIKE Dempsey and Peter Newey could be forgiven for not looking forward to the festive season as much as usual.
The Fixby duo have been in scorching form throughout the Halifax and Huddersfield Alliance's autumn series of events, and they bagged their second consecutive Am-am category victory at Outlane.

The Alliance now takes its traditional two month break, and the pair are now keeping their fingers crossed that they will still be in the same imperious nick when the programme resumes in January.

"We are certainly in a purple patch at the moment," said Newey.

"We played very poorly all summer but we are playing very well now. We gelled well today and I suppose we just seem to be good winter golfers."

Newey even defied having two shots shaved off his 16 handicap by Alliance officials wary of the duo's run of success.

He hit two gross birdies at nine and 15, the latter of which helped the Fixby team to a superb 12 points in the last four holes and a final total of 45 in the Stableford competition.

That was enough for a two point winning margin over Crow Nest Park pair Gary Broadbent and Steve Hobson, who posted a challenging 43 point total early on a day when the weather was calm and mild but heavy underfoot.

A very encouraging 14 professionals took part in the Pro-am section, the highest total for a long time, and that category produced a thrilling finish and some quality golf.

Bradley Park pair Tom Wild and Jack Pearcey's 46 points were just enough to see off a late challenge from highly-rated Crosland Heath pro Chris Hanson and his playing partner Julian Vickerman, who will be the club's captain next year.

Third place went to Hebden Bridge pair David Astin and Andy Cryer.
