Ramos hanging by a thread

JUANDE Ramos admitted he was 'worried' by the situation Tottenham find themselves in at the moment - and he is right to be.
His job has to be hanging by a thread given that they have picked up just two points from the opening eight games, their worst ever start to a league campaign.

And only one club - Southampton in 1998-99 - have escaped the drop having started so po
orly in the Premier League.

But before we can point the finger at whoever is to blame for the current crisis at White Hart Lane, we could do with knowing the full facts.

And they are not easy to come by.

Ramos built a solid reputation in charge of Seville in La Liga and last season appeared to be steering the north London outfit back to the glory days, starting with victory in the Carling Cup

The problems have come with the big striker sell-off, Jermaine Defoe moving to Portsmouth, Robbie Keane to Liverpool and Dimitar Berbatov to Manchester United.

And that leaves Darren Bent and recently-arrived Roman Pavlyuchenko as the only recognised frontmen at the club.

The big question is who allowed the three international forwards to leave the club?

If it was Ramos, then he only has himself to blame with many of the experts stating that Bent and Pavlyuchenko are too similar to play together.

If it was the board, then Ramos takes only part of the blame for the teams current predicament.

Martin Jol was sacked this time last year after one win in the opening 10 matches - and that win came against whipping boys Derby.

Ramos is a cool and calm person and is not someone who appears prone to panicking.

His biggest worry at the moment seems to be whether the board can keep their nerve as well.

TWO of England's iconic footballers were linked with bizarre moves in the papers at the weekend.

Michael Owen, remarkably still only 29, looks like he is heading to money-bags Manchester City.

And David Beckham is on his way to Italy - with AC Milan keen to secure his services.

How nice to see them bucking the current credit crunch as they continue to command massive wages.

David Moyes is also immune, having signed a five-year deal worth almost £17million despite the fact that Everton has extended its overdraft to £30million.

Don't you just love Premier League football?

VICKY Botwright lost to world number one Nicol David in the final of the World Open Squash Championship in Manchester at the weekend in her final professional match.

The 31-year-old former English number one is most famous for trying to make the sport sexy by wearing a G-string and bikini top on court.

It worked for me at the time - and for her as she briefly, literally, became the most famous player in the world - and now she has hung up her racket she will be sorely missed.
