It wasn't the first time that it occurred. Cynics will say that it always happens!
Halifax embark on an impressive row of victories only for the bubble to burst when a large crowd turns up.
A classic example was 15 years ago, in October 1993.
It was the start of Malcolm Reilly's first (and last as it turned out) full season in charge.
And he'd signed plenty of classy players as well.
Steve Hampson, John Schuster, Michael Hagan, Michael Jackson, David Boyd, Lee Harland, Paul Anderson.
The downside was that Hampson and Jackson injured themselves in a pre-season friendly against Huddersfield.
The strange thing was that, amidst all the upheaval, Reilly had lost four props and barely replaced them.
Brendan Hill and Peter Bell had left for Keighley and Dewsbury respectably, Adam Fogerty had signed for St Helens and Brent Stuart didn't return, mainly due to his commitments with the 1993 Kiwi tourists.
A lot of people still consider Stuart to be one the best props to have played for Fax in the past generation so he obviously made an impression in his 14 first team matches.
He was an interesting character off the pitch as well, enjoying the bachelor lifestyle in his house on Naylor Street just down the road from Thrum Hall after his girlfriend returned to New Zealand before Christmas.
As for Fogerty, he was one of the first players to exercise a clause in his contract which gave him "free agent" status at the end of it.
He had been a surprise addition to the playing squad in September 1991 after playing just two matches as a trialist and it took until December before he agreed the terms of a complicated contract with Peter Marsland.
Reilly's answer to the problem was to convert second rowers John Fieldhouse and Gary Lord into frontrowers.
It was controversial at the time but proved in the long term to be where their futures lay.
Despite their efforts the Thrum Hall crowd never really appreciated Lord.
One bloke even used to scream abuse at him as he stepped out of the Thrum Hall pavilion before the game.
Despite that, by the end of September it was played six, won five, drawn one at Hull.
And Fax were top of the league!
OK, so the victories were against Oldham, Featherstone, Sheffield, Leigh and Salford, they were still wins!
Then came a strange defeat at Warrington on a Monday night.
It was played on that day as Wales (with their heavy Wire contingent) had played an international game that weekend.
But just after Paul Bishop had popped over a drop goal the Wilderspool floodlights went out and the teams had to go back to the dressing rooms for quarter of an hour. When they came back Jonathan Davies scored two solo tries and that was that.
Then came the acid test. On Sunday October 24th 9,820 turned up at Thrum Hall - to see Wigan score 31 points and win easily.
And a fortnight later Castleford scored 35 points on the same ground in front of 8,000 plus. The next home league game against Widnes saw less than 6,000 turn up…..
